If the rear seal has failed, fluid will drip from the point where the driveshaft and transmission connect, at the back of the transmission.

On front-wheel-drive cars, the principle is the same, but the setup is a little different. There’s the main seal where the transmission connects to the engine, and if it fails fluid will leak from between the engine and transmission. Instead of one rear seal for the driveshaft, there are two seals for the CV axles, which connect to the front wheels.
